snake_case

Identifiers with lowercase words separated by underscores — e.g. first_name, get_user_by_id.

Where you see it

Default for variables and methods in Ruby and Python, and for many SQL column names. Rails and Django codebases expect snake_case almost everywhere except class names.

Why it matters

Crossing from JS camelCase into Ruby/Python without renaming creates friction at API boundaries and in ORMs. Naming fluency signals you work across stacks.

Interview angle

Common prompt: convert a JS object to snake_case for a Rails or Python API, or explain why Ruby methods use snake_case while classes use PascalCase.
